For fun, I still read other scripts to movies I know and I try to learn what I can and watch all interviews, commentaries and behind the scenes stuff I can, not just for my writing but because it really is interesting to me.
I've done a few "extras" parts, aka "Shemps"
when I lived in Las Vegas, NV. My first Shemping experience came from Oceans 11.
In the final cut I have two scenes and no speaking parts, but I was actually in about 5 and doing "background" noise or asking people what they wanted to drink as a waitress.
I learned a lot from being behind the scenes. Movie stars aren't all nice and sweet people.
Chaos reigns supreme and its messy.
Extras are mostly just cattle that you can't trust.
Makeup artists don't like pale skin.
Directors don't want to put the girl with the flaming red hair anywhere near Julia Roberts.
But over all it was a really rewarding experience, everyone complained when the A\C went out, there was no water bottles at times and extras even got in fights with each other. I'd do it all again in a heart beat.
I went on to do several more extra roles until I moved away. I always liked the idea of acting but I'm actually too shy to perform so I tend to stick to writing and maybe one day directing.
I used to work at CH.13, ABC as an editor and even that experience gave me a better perspective on how movies are pieced together. Both linear and non-linear. I love editing and I find it to be peaceful, unlike some other editors that don't find it to have enough creative freedom. At least not in the news, but who can blame them, right?
